The National Population Commission, NPC, don start nationwide digital registration of births and deaths through the new VitalReg platform, with the aim of making registration easier and improving Nigeria population data.
The Federal Commissioner representing Gombe State, Abubakar Danburam, disclose this, saying the electronic Civil Registration and Vital Statistics system become fully operational across the 36 states and FCT from July 1, 2026.
According to am, Nigeria dey record about 5 million births every year, but many births and deaths still dey go unregistered.
Currently, birth registration coverage na about 57 per cent, while death registration remain below 20 per cent.
NPC say this gap dey make many Nigerians lack proper legal identity and also make government planning difficult because accurate population and death data no dey available.
The commission say e don establish 4,011 registration centres across the 774 LGAs, with plan to increase the number to about 8,000 centres.

Through VitalReg, Nigerians fit get easier access to registration services, with features including online access, automated data validation and digital certificate issuance where applicable.
NPC also clarify say the recent review of fees for some administrative services no affect basic birth registration and birth notification, which remain highly subsidised.
The commission dey implement the digital platform through partnership with Barnksforte Technologies Limited, while NPC also dey work with NIMC, UNICEF and ALGON to take registration services closer to communities.
NPC don appeal to state and local governments, hospitals, traditional and religious leaders and civil society groups to encourage Nigerians to register births and deaths promptly.
The commission say accurate civil registration go help Nigeria give citizens legal identity, improve healthcare planning, strengthen population data and support better national development decisions.
